What was the best vacation you ever took and why?
About ten years ago my wife and I traveled to Europe. As Americans, our historical perspective encompasses about 400 years. In Europe, their historical perspective dates back to the 3rd and 4th centuries, and to go into a building that was built in 400 AD was so impactful to me.
What are your hobbies, and how did you get into them?
I enjoy hunting, golf, and cycling. I’ve been hunting since I was a kid, started golf after college, and started cycling when we started having children because golf took too long to play!
What’s your favorite season and why?
Fall. On a Saturday I can play a round of golf in the morning, take a bike ride after lunch and sit in a deer stand at dusk. Of course, my wife will occasionally hijack this schedule!
What’s your most prized possession and why?
My Bible. I consider it an instruction book for how to live and while I try to follow its teachings, that is very much a work-in-progress.
What are your pet peeves?
People who “Reply All” to emails with nothing to add, such as responding with “thanks”. And drivers who read/send emails/texts at stoplights without realizing the light is green!
How old were you when you started working and what was your first job?
I was 12. I mowed lawns for about a dozen residents in the small town where we lived. It was a great spring/summer job. It taught me a lot about doing a quality job (my customers were mainly older ladies who loved their lawns) and helped keep me fit because I used a push lawnmower. The average amount I earned per yard was $5.00 per yard which gives you some idea of my age. I did this until I was the legal age for employment and went to work bagging groceries at Winn Dixie.
What career highlight are you most proud of?
Co-founding SYSTEMTEC in 1998. We are fortunate to have a team that has built the company from two employees into a profitable venture that creates jobs so that those employees can achieve their goals toward a better life.
